Monika Panayotova took part in the EPP’s European Affairs Network Meeting in the European Parliament
06/03/2012
The EPP Group in the European Parliament held its 13th Network Meeting of EPP National Parliamentarians and EPP Group Members of the European Parliament in Brussels.
The Chairwoman of the Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of European Funds, Ms Monika Panayotova, represented the National Assembly’s parliamentary group GERB. She was also invited as a speaker in one of the panels on “Challenges facing the second European semester for economic policy coordination of the EU”.
On the agenda were also topics such as the Arab Spring and the new Stability Treaty.
In her address, Ms Monika Panayotova noted three main issues facing the European Semester: what are the implications of the crisis, what should be done during the semester to improve the situation and what actions are needed to achieve the objectives of the semester. She offered some steps toward this direction like a process of governance before decisions are taken, an early warning system to counter future challenges, coordinated economic policies for effective functioning of the monetary union and last but not least, an active role of the EU in boosting trust and confidence in the market, but also in its citizens.
Ms Panayotova said that the European semester and the ensuing policies thereof, have been a topic of discussion in the Bulgarian National Parliament, in particular the Committee on European Affairs has put a special emphasis on a productive dialogue with the representatives of Ministry of Finance and the business sector, NGOs and the academia.
Ms Panayotova called for a constant cooperation between institutions and joint action plans between European Parliament and the national parliaments to foster exchange of information between Member States in view to achieve the set targets of the semester, and to improve the Commission’s control mechanisms related to implementation of Commission’s recommendations to Member States.
The Bulgarian parliamentarian stressed out in her speech the single market’s role, and the importance of removing the remaining obstacles which in her view will make the market an engine of growth. “We cannot have a single market, while there are still restrictions on free movement of people, there are still unjustified regulatory obstacles and lack of full mutual recognition of professional qualifications. Market must be freed in order to be more flexible", concluded Ms Monika Panayotova.
