CEAOEF’s Chairwoman participated in a meeting with the delegation of the Friendship Group Austria-Bulgaria
21/06/2012
On June 20 2012, a delegation of the Friendship Group Austria-Bulgaria at the National Council of the Republic of Austria, headed by Mr. Mario Kunasek, met with the Friendship Group Bulgaria-Austria, chaired by Mr. Vladislav Dimitrov, at the Bulgarian National Assembly. CEAOEF’s Chairwoman Ms. Monika Panayotova and Deputy Chairperson Vladimir Toshev, the Foreign Policy and Defense Committee’s Chairperson Mr. Dobroslav Dimitrov and members Mr. Spas Panchev and Mr. Yunal Lyutfi all took part in the meeting.
CEAOEF’s Chairwoman focused on three main topics – the country’s efforts to attract foreign investments in order to stimulate its economic growth, Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area and its potential for development through the means of EU macro-regional strategies, such as the Danube Strategy.
Ms. Panayotova thanked Austria for its investments in Bulgaria in a variety of sectors ranging from electricity provision to finance and trade. She pointed out the potential of such investments in Central and Eastern Europe for generating a “win-win” situation, since the resources remain in the EU and contribute to the common competitiveness of the Union, the catching-up process of the Central and Eastern European countries and the growth of the entire European economy.
Ms. Panayotova also stated that, despite the principle of the three “No’s”, the Danube Strategy is a good foundation for additional investment through the implementation of common projects in the energy and transportation realms between the participating countries.
Ms. Panayotova, Mr. Dobroslav Dimitrov and Mr. Vladislav Dimitrov thanked their Austrian counterparts for the continuous support for Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area, and expressed their expectation that it will continue through the decisive phase of the debates on the topic in September 2012.
During the ensuing debate, Ms. Panayotova informed the participants in the meeting of the high degree of transposition of the European legislation in Bulgaria and the low incidence of penal procedures against Bulgaria.
The Austrian delegates shared their positive impressions of the Defense reform in Bulgaria and expressed their desire to use the Bulgarian experience and good practices in the transition from conscription to professional army, the legal framework (including the White Paper on Defense), and the parliamentary control in the Security and Defense sector.
