Legal Affairs Committee meets with Diplomatic Corps representatives in connection with the upcoming hearing of candidates for SJC members

The Legal Affairs Committee held a meeting with representatives of the Diplomatic Corps in connection with the upcoming hearing of candidates for members of the Supreme Judicial Council.
M.P.s from the Legal Affairs Committee presented information on the upcoming hearing of candidates for members of the Supreme Judicial Council from the National Assembly quota to the Ambassadors of the United States, Denmark, Netherlands, France and United Kingdom and diplomats from the Embassies of Germany, Austria, Finland and Greece.
After the meeting held on 4 September 2012, the Chairperson of the Legal Affairs Committee Iskra Fidosova said in a statement for the media that the conversation was focused on the need to ensure level playing field for all candidates and on the thematic groups defining the questions to be asked at the hearing on 11 September 2012. According to Fidosova, the main topics will be related to the independence of the Judiciary, the case load of magistrates and the disciplinary proceedings, the appraisal, the changes in the Judiciary and the ongoing reform of the sector. She also pointed out that the intention of the Legal Affairs Committee was to ensure competitiveness and competition among candidates so that the Members of Parliament, the Bulgarian public at large, the representatives of the Diplomatic Corps and the European Commission could get real impressions of the moral and professional qualities of the magistrates.
The Ambassadors of UK, USA and France Jonathan Allen, James Warlick and Philippe Autie underscored the importance of transparency in the election of new members of the Supreme Judicial Council.
UK Ambassador Jonathan Allen noted that it is extremely important for the candidates to answer all questions from parliamentarians, media and NGOs. In his words, it is crucial to know who the future SJC members are, why they want this job and what they intend to do once elected.
In the coming weeks there is no issue of greater importance for Bulgaria than the election of members of the Supreme Judicial Council, said the US Ambassador James Warlick. He stressed that in the past the election used to be held quietly and behind closed doors. This year, however, it will be held openly and in a transparent manner. In his words, the election is an important step forward in the efforts to restore confidence in the Judiciary.
The fight against corruption and organized crime is of key importance to the reform of the Judiciary, said the Ambassador of France Philippe Autie. We appreciate the efforts of Bulgaria in this respect and believe that the election of SJC members constitutes a major step in furthering the reform of the Judiciary, he went on to say.
