The National Assembly marked Bulgaria's accession to the European Union at a solemn sitting

The National Assembly held a solemn sitting on 11 January 2007 on the occasion of Bulgaria's accession to the European Union and the European agenda of the Bulgarian Parliament.
The national anthem was played at the beginning of the sitting.
National Assembly Chairman Georgi Pirinski delivered a speech at the opening. President of the Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov and Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev addressed the National Assembly. Leaders of the Parliamentary Groups of the 40th National Assembly also made statements.
Attending the sitting were Cabinet Ministers, senior judiciary members, members of the Constitutional Court, representatives of the religious denominations in Bulgaria, central and local government officials, the Chief of General Staff of the Bulgarian Armed Forces. Leaders of the political parties and coalitions represented in the 40th National Assembly, diplomats, trade unions leaders, representatives of professional organisations, media editors-in-chief and cultural figures were among the guests attending the sitting.
German Bundestag Vice-President Mrs. Petra Pau, whose country holds the EU Presidency as of 1 January 2007, was a special guest at the sitting.
The solemn sitting ended to the strains of the "Ode to Joy", the anthem of United Europe.
