Bulgaria to Lobby for Lifting the Embargo on Libya in the UN Security Council
20/02/2003
Bulgaria to stand for lifting the embargo on Libya in the UN Security Council, asked Libya’s Ambassador H.E. Farag Gibril at his meeting with the Parliamentary Group for Friendship with Libya at the National Assembly. Mr. Konstantin Penchev, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group for Friendship with Libya, undertook that Bulgaria would back Libya on this issue.
The Iraqi crisis and the Palestinian issue were also discussed at the meeting. The Libyan Ambassador considers that the Iraqi crisis reflects on the whole world and the peaceful solution is the best scenario in this situation. Mr. Penchev reiterated the position of Bulgaria in favour of a peaceful outcome of the Iraqi crisis and of use of military force only when all other opportunities have been exhausted.

The two sides shared the opinion that economic relations between Bulgaria and Libya must be stepped up. According to Mr. Gibril, better political relations will favour economic co-operation between the two countries.

Mr. Gibril informed the Parliamentary Group for Friendship with Libya that the trial against the six Bulgarian medics would most probably be held in March. He expressed hope that the outcome of the trial will be positive for them.
