National Assembly Chairman Georgi Pirinski headed an official Bulgarian delegation for the traditional celebrations in Vatican and Rome of 24 May, the Day of Slav Letters and Bulgarian Education and Culture.

The delegation included the Parliamentary Group of Coalition for Bulgaria leader Mihail Mikov, the Parliamentary Group of National Movement Simeon II leader Anelia Mingova and the Chairman of the Education and Science Committee of the National Assembly Lyutvi Mestan, as well as Metropolitan Grigorii of Veliko Turnovo; Father Stefan Manolov, Vicar General of the Eparchy of Sofia and Plovdiv; Deputy Ministers of Education and Science Ekaterina Vitkova and of Culture Ivan Tokadjiev.

On 23 May 2007 the delegation visited the Church of Sts Vincent and Anastasius in which liturgies are served for the Bulgarian orthodox community.

On 24 May 2007, the Day of Slav Letters and Bulgarian Education and Culture,
the Bulgarian delegation, led by National Assembly Chairman Georgi Pirinski, had an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. After the audience, Pirinski and the delegation conferred with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State.

Later on, National Assembly Chairman Georgi Pirinski laid flowers at the tomb of Pope John Paul II.

The Bulgarian delegation paid tribute at the grave of Saint Cyril, who, together with his brother Methodius, had invented the Slav alphabet in the ninth century. Flowers were also laid at the Bulgarian plaque in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
