On August 22, 2007, the Chairman of the National Assembly Georgi Pirinski sent a letter to Maxim Benvenisti, Chairman of the Shalom Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria and to Robert Djerassi, Chairman of the Central Israelite Spiritual Council. The letter is a response to the concern expressed by the two organizations over the publicly announced intention of the Bulgarian National Union to create a so called “national guard”.

“I share your concern in connection with the attempts to start such an organization, which also run against the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Bulgaria”, points out the Chairman of the National Assembly.

“I also share the understanding that the state institutions should analyze with greater attention and in depth the conditions and the prerequisites leading to the outburst of ethnic-based conflicts, which threaten the social order and should also update their policies for a wholesome integration of the various ethnic and social groups in the Bulgarian society”, writes on Georgi Pirinski.

The Chairman of the National Assembly informs Maxim Benvenisti and Robert Djerassi that a copy of their letter has already been forwarded to the standing parliamentary Committee On Public Affairs And Media, with a recommendation to discuss it and come up with adequate measures.

On August 21, 2007 the leaders of the Shalom Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria and the Central Israelite Spiritual Council approached the President of the Republic, the Chairman of the National Assembly and the Prime Minister with a request to “seriously look into the probability of such a national guard to be created, which, without clearly defined powers and competences, may wish in certain situations to seize the functions of state organs and institutions that are constitutionally called upon to guarantee and protect the social order and the safety of the Bulgarian citizens.”
