“The Constituent power and representative democracy” was the subject discussed on April 16th by National Assembly Chairman Georgi Pirinski and prominent Bulgarian politicians, journalists, scientists and public figures. The event was organized on the occasion of the 129th Anniversary of the Turnovo Constitution and next year celebration of the 130th Anniversary of the Constituent Assembly.
Chairman Pirinski noticed that the Anniversary of the Turnovo Constitution adoption was in fact an Anniversary of the foundation of the parliamentary system in Bulgaria. He appealed to the participants to help in making the forthcoming celebration of the 130th Constituent Assembly not just the consecutive marking of a remarkable historic event but an occasion to rethink, from the today's point of view, the example of the convocation, the work and the results of the Constituent Assembly.
Georgi Pirinski raised before the audience the issue that Bulgarian statehood should be kept strong through the concerted efforts of the institutions, political parties and the civil society structures.
In his presentation the national ombudsman Ginio Ganev underscored the importance for the society to stand by the constitutional order and what would be the consequences of its negation, examples of which could be found in the past of Bulgaria.
Our New, present day Constitution is trying to be an imperative to reason and a greater understanding, and we should not forget that both republicanism and parliamentarism are part of our statehood, adopted by our New Constitution on 12 July 1991, he added.
