Georgi Pirinski Addresses the National Assembly on the Occasion of May 9th
At the beginning of today’s plenary sitting, National Assembly Chairman Georgi Pirinski addressed his colleagues . In honor of the remarkable historic events that happened on this date he stated:
Esteemed Colleagues,
Allow me to draw your attention on the today’s date – May 9th. It is marking two historic events –the first is the end of the Second World War in Europe, the victory over Hitler’s fascism and the advance of peace, the second one, 5 years later, the Declaration of the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, launching the establishment of United Europe.
These two events today are celebrated by peoples in all of Europe and far away from our continent. The events on one side commemorate the Second World War victims , and their bravery that led to the victory against Hitler’s coalition and on the other side, the celebrations are an expression of the the optimistic and glad feeling that people can live together in consent and peace, that centuries old animosities could be overcome, that they can build a World, a community where peace, democracy and humanistic values can prevail.
Let us celebrate this Day – May 9th. Let us pay our respects to those who made it happen and let us make the effort to live up to the challenge extended by Robert Schuman to Europe at the time, that remains valid today, to continue the integration of Europe, one step further of which was the Treaty of Lisbon, giving to this process a fresh start.
