The team of Sofia University “St. Kl. Ohridski”- first place winner in the International Forum on European law met on May 23rd with National Assembly Deputy chairperson prof. L.Kornezov and with prof. Ognian Gergikov, Chairman of the parliamentary Committee on human rights and religious denominations.

National assembly is the first institution to greet officially several law students representing Bulgaria in the prestigious competition. The event was held in Poznan, Poland at the beginning of May. It is organized every year by the Court of the European Union and Cambridge University. 18 teams took part in this year’s edition. The Bulgarian participants were greeted personally by Lord Hadli, President of the Jury, for their victory – a decision on a case on human rights.

Students were unanimous that the legal case they were asked to solve had been extremely complicated. The competition’s procedure consists of two parts - written and oral. The oral part was held in an open court sitting in the course of two days.
Judges were allowed to interrupt the pleading student and ask questions at all times, such that required a prompt and clear answer. Court discussions were held in English.

The Bulgarian team participation was sponsored by Cambridge University, a partner of Sofia University, as well as by the NGO “American Foundation for Bulgaria”.

Traditionally the next forum has to be held in the country of the competition’s last winner. Both prof. Kornezov and Gergikov committed themselves to assist Bulgaria in hosting the event next year
