During the 63rd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations a hearing was held themed “Effective peacekeeping and conflict prevention”.
The hearing is jointly organized by the President’s office and the Inter- Parliamentary Union of the UN.

The hearing is attended by representatives of 60 national parliaments. Bulgaria’s delegation is headed by Kamelia Kassabova, deputy chairperson of the National Assembly. In her speech Kassabova underscored the importance of national parliaments and the efforts of Bulgaria in particular, for the prevention of conflicts and abuse of human rights by their legislations and by carrying out common regional initiatives.

Ms. Kassabova pointed to the fact that Bulgaria, in the last years, appears as a stabilizing factor that brings security on the Balkans, a region known throughout history as the “powder –keg”. She mentioned the initiative launched by countries in the region for cooperation in South-East Europe and the fact that Bulgaria’s parliament hosts its Secretariat. She said that this fact proves that even a small country like Bulgaria can generate security and stability in an insecure world
