The draft law on the defense and military forces of the Republic of Bulgaria was adopted at first reading on February 6. The draft foresees further integration within the Ministry of Defense to include a new structure, dealing with the army and the creation of the position of “Chief of Defense” and also the figure of military Ombudsman. The new law provides detailed regulations on the order and conditions to be followed before sending Bulgarian military troops on assignments outside the country.
It also grants the military personnel with new social gains, such as free housing, provided by the housing fund of the Ministry of Defense. After 15 years of service, members of the military will be able to buy their residence. The draft also suggests kindergartens, free of charge, for children of the military. It further envisages the appointments of foreigners or persons with double citizenship, on certain positions in the military, to discretion of the Minister of Defense.
