28/02/2009
February 27-28, 2009

The Conference of the parliamentary speakers of the European Union member countries and the European Parliament was held on January 27 and 28, 2009 at the France’s National Assembly.

The key issue discussed at the forum was how parliaments contribute to the efforts of the governments to manage the current financial and economic crisis. Speaking to media representatives from Bulgaria, chairman Pirinski stressed that the leading role in this respect falls on governments but parliaments could be very helpful with giving priority and adopting legislation aimed at anti crisis measures and exercising control and oversight over its implementation.

The European speakers of parliament have discussed the future of the European institutions and the Treaty of Lisbon. The first session of the Forum was opened by the presidents of the French National Assembly and Senate, M. Bernard Accoyer and M. Gerard Larsher. They were among the keynote speakers on the topic of this year’s conference. Lectures were delivered also by the speakers of the Hungarian and Portuguese parliaments, Mr Jaime Gama, and Mrs Katalin Szili.

An important issue discussed at the forum was the “The future of Europe for the year 2030”.
The General Secretary of the Bulgarian National Assembly, Mr. Ognyan Avramov was among the participants in the Conference.
