The National Assembly opened its sitting on September 9, 2009 with a minute of silence in memory of the Bulgarian citizens, who died in the tragic accident in Lake Ohrid.

From the parliament’s rostrum, the chairwoman Tsetska Tsacheva indicated that all relevant government agencies have responded to the crisis promptly and responsibly. Urgent intervention of the institutions was necessary to help the relatives of the victims as well as to keep society informed throughout the day of the tragedy, she said.

The National Assembly President noted that a tragedy of such magnitude will inevitably find the response of parliament. If the competent authorities, after careful analysis, find some flaws in the regulations, the National Assembly would be ready to fulfill its obligations and exercise its legislative prerogatives, added Tsetska Tsacheva. She pointed out that parliamentary committees concerned with this problem may express their views during this week's regular sittings.

National Assembly paid also tribute with a minute of silence to all who died in the past century for their ideals.
