The Chair of the National Assembly Tsetska Tsacheva took part on October 12, 2009 in the inaugural ceremony of the academy founders Marin Drinov and Ivan Evstratiev-Geshov memorial plaques at the front of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ (BAS) headquarters . The event is one of the initiatives marking the 140th anniversary since the foundation of the Academy.

The speaker of Bulgaria’s parliament has sent on this occasion a greeting address to the BAS President acad. Nicolay Subotinov, to the academy members and correspondents, and to all the researchers and staff working in the Scientific Institutes of the Academy. In her address, Ms Tsetska Tsacheva notes that every statesman would feel proud to express the deep gratitude of our society for the priceless contribution of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the past 140 years, for the devotion, inspiration and productive activity of its scientists, dedicated to the advance of Bulgarian science.

I am convinced that along with the festive events, this remarkable anniversary would arouse a number of detailed discussions, exchange of views, ideas and assessments on the current status and prospects of the Bulgarian science, on the problems facing our society’s material and spiritual development. Ms Tsetska Tsacheva writes further that the new realities of the present highly competitive environment in the European Union and the world's globalization require new policies and concepts to ensure successful development of the BAS as a modern and renowned research institution.

"I am fully aware that these challenges face not just the scientific community but all government institutions and the whole civil society as well. For the prosperity of our nation is inseparably linked to the noble scientific and creative mission of the BAS for the advancement of knowledge and the expansion of the Bulgarian cultural, intellectual and spiritual wealth" says in conclusion the National Assembly President.
