Bulgarian medal and prize winners of the Sixth International Olympiad in Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics held in Kazakhstan on a visit to the National Assembly

Bulgarian medal and prize winners of the Sixth International Olympiad in Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics held in Almaty, Kazahstan, made a visit at the National Assembly on January 21, 2010.

National Assembly President Tsetska Tsacheva and MPs conferred with young people and their team heads in the plenary hall.”I am always extremely excited to have the chance of meeting young people who have shown excellence in their chosen area of creativity”, said the Chair of Parliament to the present students from Sofia School of Mathematics and the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Shumen. Your performance in Almaty proves once again that Bulgaria is capable, that our young people, guided by their talented teachers and sponsors, can make Bulgaria famous far away abroad, added Tsetska Tsacheva. She noted that young mathematicians, physicists and IT talents are the architects of the new virtual world.

Tsetska Tsacheva wished to the young people more success in the future and to persevere in their dedication. She assured them that government institutions will do their best in order to ensure normal conditions for the development of their talent.

The managers of the two high school teams thanked the Chair of the parliament and the MPs for their attention. They explained the difficulties encountered in the training process of the national teams, due to the lack of adequate facilities and curriculum in physics and wished their disciples successful careers in Bulgaria.

Assembly President Tsetska Tsacheva confered the medal winners with honorary plaques of the National Assembly. Then the young people and their leaders talked with the Chairman and members of the parliamentary Committee on Education, Science , Children, Youth and Sports Ognyan Stoichkov.

At the prestigious international competition in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria was represented with the two teams - from Sofia and Shumen. They ranked third and fourth respectively in the final team standings. The one from the Sofia High School in Mathematics won two gold and one bronze medal in the mathematics section. The names of the boys are Luboslav Panchev, Victor Valov and Daniel Dobrev.The two silver awards were won by Ivaylo Karamanolev and Vladislav Haralampiev in the Informatics section's race.

Graduates of the Мathematics and Natural Sciences School in Shoumen won two medals in math - a silver and bronze and two silver in Informatics. The winners were Givko Zhechev, Mladen Valkov, Simeon Ivanov and Mihail Kovachev.

Together with young people in parliament were their mentors and the mathematics program director of the “American Foundation for Bulgaria “ Alexey Christov. Since 2004 the Foundation provides funds for the preparation and participation of Bulgaria’s Olympic Team in international math competitions.
