The National Assembly has not adopted the motion to raise and maintain charges against President Georgi Parvanov and to ask the Constitutional Court to suspend his powers for breach of the Constitution.

155 deputies voted in support of launching the procedure for the president’s impeachment, 72 were against, without any abstentions. The votes in favor came from the members of the GERB parliamentary group, the PG of the Blue Coalition, PG Ataka and three independents. The parliamentary groups of Coalition for Bulgaria and Movements for Rights and Freedoms opposed the draft resolution.

According to the Constitution, the impeachment procedure can be initiated on the motion of not less than one fourth of all MPs and needs to be passed by the majority vote of two-thirds of all members of the parliament.
