The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland, who made a visit to Bulgaria on February 23, 2011, met with National Assembly President Tsetska Tsacheva and members of the Permanent Bulgarian Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe stated clearly the will of his Organization to assist and support Bulgaria in its accession to the Schengen Agreement.
Mr. Jagland acquainted the Bulgarian deputies with the current reform in the Council of Europe, started at his initiative. The idea of the reform, supported also by the Bulgarian members to PACE, is to make the Organization more efficient and more helpful to the citizens in the different countries. The members of the Bulgarian Delegation to PACE confirmed that our country is committed and will actively support the process of reform. Among the other issues discussed were the reform of the European Court on Human Rights in Strasbourg and the ongoing negotiations between the Council of Europe and the European Union for the EU’s accession to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
During the talks Thorbjorn Jagland commended highly the work of the Bulgarian representatives to PACE.
