Bulgarian athletes with intellectual impairments, participants in the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011 in Athens visit the National Assembly

Bulgarian athletes with intellectual impairments, participants in the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011 in Athens visited the National Assembly at the invitation of its President Tsetska Tsacheva.


 


In her address towards the participants and their coaches, the chair of the National Assembly praised their achievements and dedication. She stressed that politicians in Bulgaria should commit to this noble initiative aiming at ensuring full integration of citizens with disabilities and at giving them opportunities for sport activities and competitions.


 


She handed out to the sportsmen and their coaches the honorary plaque of the National Assembly titled:”130 Years National Assembly”.


 


During this visit was launched a National campaign entitled “Share the sensation”, which is held under the patronage of the National Assembly’s president Tsetska Tsacheva. The campaign is organized by Special Olympics Bulgaria in partnership with UNICEF and the Foundation “Pro Sport” on the occasion of the 2011 World Summer Special Olympics Games in Athens. The campaign will continue until December 3rd 2011, the International Day of Disabled People. Presented was also the “Declaration for access of people with disabilities to sports”.


Both the campaign and the Declaration aim at attracting more adherents to the cause of intellectually and other disabled athletes


 


In Athens the Bulgarian participants won 9 gold and 10 bronze medals; 10 forth, 2 fifth and 3 seventh positions. The athletes were between 8 and 36 years old coming from 16 Bulgarian cities.


 


In the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011 in Athens took part a total of 7500 athletes, accompanied by 40 000 family members, 25 000 volunteers and 3000 technical staff and organizers from 185 countries proving once again that there is no limit for the human spirit and will.
