Diana Kovacheva was sworn in as Minister of Justice at the National Assembly. She replaces on the post Margarita Popova who was elected vice-president of Bulgaria. The proposed change in the Cabinet was supported by 109 deputies, 44 were against and 13 abstained.

It is a great challenge for me to take over such a serious sphere as the Ministry of Justice, said Diana Kovacheva, short before taking the oath of office.
She promised in her work to emphasize on the professionalism and competence of the Judiciary’s personnel. She added that the reform in the Judiciary should be supported and put to work in cooperation with all other institutions and the executive power. She stressed that her priority as minister of justice will be on reinforcing the warrants ensuring the supremacy of law and the protection of the citizens’ rights. She rejected categorically the allegations that “Transparency without borders”, the organization which she was heading up to now, had taken part in shady projects.
Diana Kovacheva was born in Sofia in 1975. In 1988 she graduated from the Law Faculty of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. She has a PhD in International Law and International Relations. In 2000-2001 she worked as a researcher at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Law Research Institute. In 2001-2002 she took the position of a Senior Expert in the International Cooperation and International Legal Aid Directorate of the Justice Ministry. She was Executive Director of “Transparency without borders” Association, which is a branch of the world organization “Transparency International” (August 2002 – 28 November 2011).
