The Bulgarian parliament is in favor of growing the pressure on the regime in Syria and the imposition of effective sanctions, including end of all arms shipments. This is written in the Declaration of the National Assembly, adopted unanimously with the votes of 135 deputies, with none “against” or “abstain”. The National Assembly insists on the immediate halt of the violence and the establishment of humanitarian aid corridors to the population in distress. The Bulgarian parliament supports the proposed by the Arab League plan for voluntary withdrawal of Bashar-Al-Assad from the rule of the country and the peaceful transition towards democracy, based on a multiparty system, respect for human rights and freedom of the media, continues the declaration.
Based on data from the United Nations, until now 8000 Syrian citizens have perished during the unrest. The Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr. Dobroslav Dimitrov, explained that the Bulgarian parliament could not remain indifferent in this situation even more so because of the region’s closeness to Bulgaria. He recalled that there was a year since the start of the protests in the Arab state.
