Parliamentary cooperation between Bulgaria and Latvia within the context of their common future in the EU and NATO was among the accents in the conversation between Prof. Ognian Gerdjikov, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Mrs. Vaira Vike-Freiberga, President of the Republic of Latvia.

The President Vaira Vike-Freiberga pays a state visit here at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov. This is the first ever visit by a Latvian head of State to Bulgaria.

The common foreign policy priorities of Bulgaria and Latvia give an impetus to the bilateral relations in all areas, said Prof. Gerdjikov in the course of meeting. The people of Latvia and Bulgaria are united by the fact that they share common values of the democratic development process, said Mrs. Vaira Vike-Freiberga. According to her, after becoming EU members the two countries’ parliaments will strengthen their relations. She voiced her satisfaction with the fruitful work of the groups for friendship in the two parliaments.
