The parliament has decided to conduct national referendum regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant to find the answer of the specific question: "Should nuclear energy be developed in Bulgaria through the building of a new nuclear power plant?"
98 deputies from the parliamentary group of political party GERB voted in support of the question with the above wording. One deputy from the Blue Coalition has voted against, 5 members of the Ataka party parliamentary group have supported the decision. 8 independent deputies voted “yes”, 1 against. The parliamentary groups of the Coalition for Bulgaria and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms have not participated in the vote.
The original wording proposed by the initiative committee established to organize the national referendum was: "Should nuclear energy be developed in Bulgaria through the building of a Nuclear Plant at the Belene site?"
The debates on the issue took more than 3 hours and were broadcast live on the channels of the Bulgarian National Television and the National Radio.
