National Assembly president, Mihail Mikov, has met on September 6, 2013 with the European commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva. During the talks they discussed a broad range of topics relating to the humanitarian aspects of the crisis in Syria and the capabilities of our country to create favorable conditions and to respond adequately in an eventual massive inflow of refugees. Both parties shared the opinion that healthcare, education and specialized psychological assistance issues should be on the focus of attention taking into consideration the fact that most refugees are women and children. Commissioner Georgieva has presented the actions taken so far in this regard by the EU commission, stressing together the EU commission, represented by her, and the member states, have mobilized around 1billon and 300 thousand euro to assist Syria and its neighboring countries, which makes the EU the biggest donor in this crisis.
The two leaders have expressed firm position that good attitude towards the refugees on behalf of the local population is exceptionally important. They also discussed the possibilities to attract European funds to tackle the effects of the crisis in case the latter deepens.
Mihail Mikov has acquainted Kristalina Georgieva with the priorities in the work of the 42nd National Assembly and confirmed that the conflict in Syria and its potential aftermaths are closely followed by the parliament and the government. The two parties discussed issues linked to the European policies in the field of humanitarian aid and crisis response.
