National Assembly observes the Day of Thrace – March 26th
26/03/2014

The National Assembly has marked today, March 26, 2014 the Day of Thrace. At the sitting’s opening the chair of parliament Mihail Mikov stressed this is a day of glory, pride and commemoration of the sacrifice of Bulgarian soldiers fallen over Thracian lands, a day of remembrance of the tragedy and martyrdom of thousands of Bulgarian refugees.

Today we commemorate the sacrifice of the Bulgarian heroes who gave their life for the freedom, the unity and integrity of the Motherland, the heroes who wrote with their blood and hearts the history of our Fatherland, who had had in those circumstances the strength and the courage to choose to be led by the words of a Thracian leader: “Don’t forget, but don’t revenge”, said Mihail Mikov in his address. He recalled that the cause of Bulgarians at the time was unity, not division, consent, not confrontation, patriotism, not political bickering and vanity and urged: “Let us follow their lessons and let us be worth of them”.

The head of parliament reminded the fact that our grateful grandfathers had proclaimed 26 March as the Day to celebrate the history of the battles over Thracia for the first time back in 1914. Since 2006 the date is marked officially by all Bulgarians.

March 26th is one of the brightest and memorable dates of our history and a heroic page in the new history of Bulgaria. Its importance could be compared to dates like 3rd March and 6th September, noted Mihail Mikov. “Let’s remember that the love for the Fatherland is the most sacred, the most pure and the truest love, one that should lead us like a faith does and be our cause.” he ended.
