Under the patronage of the 43rd National Assembly President Tsetska Tsacheva, together with the parliamentary Healthcare Committee at the National Assembly was marked the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 2015. On January 28th, 2015, on the NA premises was opened an Information stand with materials about the prevention and prophylactics of the only preventable cancer. Information was provided on the achievements reached by the National Program for Primary Prevention of Cervical Cancer.
Tsetska Tsacheva addressed the participants in the initiative pointing to the fact that it had become customary of the National Assembly to focus and discuss in details the problems of preventing socially significant diseases in Bulgaria, among which is also the cervical cancer. She expressed support for everyone involved in the prevention and treatment of the disease and her hope that the number of cervical cancer patients will decrease.
According to the data provided by the Ministry of Health, since the start of the program in 2012 until December 2014, vaccinated with the first dose against the disease were 17 011 girls, with the second dose - 15 086. The third dose was administered to 12 720 girls. The National Program for Primary Prevention of Cervical Cancer is covering the vaccines administered to girls not older than 12 years. Starting at 2015 financing will also be allocated for the 13 years old.
Cervical cancer is the 4th most frequent cancer among women between 20 – 45 years of age in the world. According to the National Cancer Register in Bulgaria more than 1000 women fall ill of the disease annually and each day 1 woman dies of it.
The initiative to mark the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 2015 was held with the assistance of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Finance, the National Health Insurance Fund, the Municipality of Sofia, the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, the National Cancer Register, the National Association of General Physicians, the National Association of Primary Care Pediatricians, the Bulgarian Red Cross, the National Association for Cervical Cancer Prevention, the European Cervical Cancer Association, the Bulgarian Association for Innovative Medicine and the Parents’ Association.
