Tolerance and mutual respect is the key to reaching unity in all Europe. Foreign affairs and security policies of the EU should be alike, the president of the National Assembly Tsetska Tsacheva said at the meeting with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.
The meeting was held on 23 July 2015 at the National Assembly. It was attended by the chairpersons of the Foreign Affairs and Defense and of the European Affairs and Oversight of European Funds Committees as well as by heads of parliamentary groups.
At the meeting Federica Mogherini stressed the importance of parliaments not only in respect to the internal policies of their countries but particularly in the areas of parliamentary diplomacy and foreign policy. She added that parliaments could contribute a lot to define a common European foreign policy which, in her view, should be worked out together by all Europeans.
Federica Mogherini took interest in the parliamentary debate and priorities of Bulgaria in regards to European foreign policy aspects and in what could be done to meet the expectations of Bulgarian citizens. We could succeed in overcoming the challenges if only we keep united, she noted.
The problems discussed in the European Union are also problems on the agenda of the National Assembly, Tsetska Tsacheva pointed out. She gave as examples the security of the EU and its citizens, the migration wave, the crisis between Ukraine and Russia in view of its proximity to Bulgaria. She further said lawmakers of the 43rd National Assembly are aware of the responsibility of Bulgaria towards the security of all European citizens. The National Assembly President continued by saying Bulgaria follows the same attitude as a country belonging to the Schengen area and it has met all technical criteria for accession to the space. Tsetska Tsacheva stated she was convinced that the accession of Bulgaria and Romania in the nearest future will lead to a greater security of the entire European Union.
