"The Great War (1915-1918)” exhibition was unveiled at the National Assembly on the occasion of the World War I centenary. The exhibition, organized under the patronage of National Assembly Vice-President Krasimir Karakachanov, is entitled “Macedonia: a look behind the frontline” featuring 36 photographs from the family archive of Eng. Rumen Kuzov.

The Bulgarian army fought for a just cause, said Krasimir Karakachanov, pointing out that our country entered the First World War not to conquer foreign territories but to liberate our Macedonian brothers. In his words, the exhibition is a testimony that the Bulgarian army was greeted in Macedonia with love and hope, and sent off with tears.


The exhibition aims to illustrate the little-known military life behind the frontline through various events and facts such as military celebrations and feasts, moments of soldiers repose, military field hospital, a military theater group along with the lifestyle and customs of Bulgarians from the town of Prilep. Many of the displayed photographs have captured the boundless heroism of Bulgarian troops at Doiran, Krivolak, Cherna River, along the Struma River etc.
For the first time on public display are photos that have captured the military theater group of the 14th “Macedonian” Infantry Regiment in the composition of the 7th Rila Division. The photographs have been preserved and probably taken by Lieutenant Dimitar Neychov Popov.

WWI opposed the Entente (Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, Serbia, USA, China and more than 20 other countries) versus the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire). Bulgaria joined the war on October 14, 2015 with two armies. Second Army under Gen. Georgi Todorov engaged in military operations mainly in Macedonia.
