National Assembly Chairperson Tsetska Tsacheva welcomes participants in the conference: Strengthening judicial independence and impartiality as a prerequisite for the rule of law in the member states of the European Council

The Chairperson of the National Assembly, Tsetska Tsacheva has welcomed the participants in the conference: Strengthening judicial independence and impartiality as a prerequisite for the rule of law in the member states of the European Council.

The event was held in the context of Bulgaria’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and was organized by the Ministry of Justice with the assistance of the Council of Europe.

The Chairperson of the Parliament noted the themes discussed at the Conference are the same as the ones debated in each member-state’s legislature due to the fact that independence and impartiality of the judiciary concern both the legislative and the executive powers. Aware of its responsibility the Bulgarian parliament had passed recently amendments to the Constitution, Tsacheva underscored. She thanked the Venice Committee of the Council of Europe for its constructive assistance.

She also stated: I am convinced that the action plan of the Council of Europe aimed at strengthening the independence and the impartiality of the judicial power will receive real dimensions in the future legislative amendments adopted by the national parliaments of the member countries of the Council of Europe, directed towards the strengthening of democracy, supremacy of the law and equality of the citizens before the law.
