National Assembly President Prof. Ognian Gerdjikov met with the Speaker of the Republic of Latvia Saeima

During the official visit of a Bulgarian parliamentary delegation to Latvia, National Assembly President Prof. Ognian Gerdjikov met with the Speaker of the Republic of Latvia Saeima Mrs. Ingrīda Ūdre.

Mrs. Ūdre informed Prof. Gerdjikov about the forthcoming elections in Latvia for the European Parliament, the National Assembly press office said. On 12 June this year Latvia will elect 9 Members of EP with a term of office 5 years. Mrs. Ūdre assured Prof. Gerdjikov that as a member of the European Union Latvia would support and assist Bulgaria on its road to EU membership.

Prof. Gerdjikov voiced satisfaction with the opening of the Honorary Consulate of Latvia in Sofia. Bulgaria also wishes to open a consulate to the Baltic states and Latvia is given preference in this respect. The opening of a consulate will contribute to the development of the trade and economic relations between the two countries, he added.

Gerdjikov acquainted the Speaker of the Republic of Latvia Saeima with the case of the Bulgarian medics in Libya.

National Assembly President Prof. Ognian Gerdjikov informed the Saeima European Affairs Committee of the progress made by Bulgaria towards EU accession. Among the subjects under discussion was the Kozloduy nuclear power plant and the closure of its Units 3 and 4.
