Active political dialogue between Bulgaria and Romania and their close positions are an excellent basis for creating even closer contacts in all areas of partnership. This was the common opinion shared at a meeting by the President of the National Assembly Tsetska Tsacheva and the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis.

The President of the National Assembly noted that as neighbours Bulgaria and Romania had traditional and deep historical ties. Good neighbourly and friendly relations today are built on the principles of European and Euro-Atlantic cooperation and mutual interest, pointed out Tsetska Tsacheva. She highly appreciated the initiative for holding regular joint meetings of the two governments, thereby extending the interaction between the two countries on topical and important issues.
A positive role also plays the dynamic development of parliamentary cooperation, the President of the National Assembly said, and highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 6 April 2016 between the parliaments of Bulgaria and Romania during the visit of a Romanian parliamentary delegation led by the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania Valeriu Zgonea.

Another major focus of the talks was the regional cooperation and the Third Plenary Session of the SEECP Parliamentary Assembly held several days ago in Sofia. This forum makes the problems of South East Europe more visible to European institutions, noted the President of the National Assembly, and added that when parliamentarians of the Assembly speak in a single voice, together they give a positive sign for the entire region. Tsetska Tsacheva stated that in the focus of the SEECP Parliamentary Assembly were infrastructure, transport and energy connectivity, which play an important role for the economic development of the region.

Among the topics discussed were the enlargement policy of the European Union in regard to Western Balkans, migration pressure on the EU, and the efforts at accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schendgen.

Klaus Iohannis informed the President of the Bulgarian Parliament of the key steps taken by Romania in combating corruption. He noted that problems arose when legislation had to be enforced.
