The National Assembly opened its doors for visitors for a third time this year. In the framework of the European days of legacy today hundreds of citizens visited the parliament on the Day of Open Doors. This year in Bulgaria the joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union is held under the slogan “The cultural legacy in the information society” and enables the citizens to visit landmarks of high cultural value across the country.  

The guests of Parliament were able to tour the building, to see the plenary hall of the National Assembly, and the ongoing exhibition related to the history of the legislative institution.

The building of the Bulgarian Parliament was designed by architect Konstantin Jovanovich. The design was presented by his author in May 1884 and in November the same year its construction began. Construction and furnishing of the building continued until 1886. In the period from 1896 to 1899 a two-storey north wing was constructed, accommodating offices and archives of the National Assembly, and in 1925 construction of a three-storey north wing began, containing a waiting room, lobbies and archives. The building was declared a monument of culture of national importance in 1955.
More than 5000 persons visited the building of the legislative institution on 20 February and managed to see exhibitions related to the life and deed of Vasil Levski and in commemoration of the 140 years of the April Uprising and the death of Hristo Botev. On the Day of the Constitution – 16 April and on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Exarch Antim I the National Assembly opened doors and presented an exhibition with the originals of the four Bulgarian Constitutions and the two amendments to the Tarnovo Constitution.
