
The Speaker of the Parliament Dimitar Glavchev has had talks with the Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło. Both of them highly evaluated the development of Bulgarian-Polish relations. It was emphasised that the two countries have friendly relations based on the historical and cultural ties between the two nations and the membership in the EU and NATO.
Dimitar Glavchev stressed that it is necessary to encourage dialogue and interaction on the parliamentary level. He explained that both parliaments have Friendship Groups, which can play an important role for developing and deepening bilateral relations.
The Polish Prime Minister indicated that Poland looks forward with hope to the forthcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. She mentioned the good cooperation between the two countries as EU member-states and their similar positions on the European prospect for the Western Balkans.
The Speaker of the Parliament Dimitar Glavchev said that the European prospect for the Western Balkan states will be a key priority in the programme of the Bulgarian Presidency. We believe that the debate on the future of Europe is connected with the European prospect for these countries and their inclusion is an essential tool to consolidate reforms, he added. Dimitar Glavchev indicated that the motto of the Bulgarian Presidency has not been randomly chosen: Unity makes strength.
The Prime Minister of Poland Beata Szydło pointed out that the two countries are partners in a number of areas, yet there are more opportunities to enhance cooperation. There is a potential for closer cooperation in infrastructure and culture, she said.
After the meeting the Speaker of the Parliament Dimitar Glavchev showed the Polish Prime Minister the Plenary Hall of the Bulgarian Parliament.
The meeting, which took place in the National Assembly, was attended by the Chair of the Foreign Policy Committee Dzhema Grozdanova, the Chair of the Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of the European Funds Christian Vigenin and the Chair of the Bulgaria-Poland Friendship Group Erol Mehmed.
