Speaker of Parliament Tsveta Karayancheva has talked to President of European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) Prof. Thierry Courvoisier. The meeting was attended by Chair of Education and Science Committee Milena Damyanova and President of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Academician Julian Revalski.
Prof. Courvoisier is in Bulgaria for the meeting of the Bureau and Council of EASAC. He told Tsveta Karayancheva that the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was the host and co-organiser of the event, in view of the forthcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2018.
Prof. Courvoisier said that EASAC was created by the national academies of sciences of the EU member states with a role to provide to EU politicians research-based expertise on issues of benefit to EU citizens.
Speaker of Parliament Tsveta Karayancheva said that the interaction with the academia was very important for politicians in the interest of the welfare of citizens. The knowledge and opinions of scientists are extremely valuable in the drafting of laws, she said and added that politicians counted on the expert opinion of representatives of the academia in a number of areas.
Prof. Courvoisier said that EASAC was involved in drafting analyses and recommendations on topical issues and problems related to the development of EU policies. We can advise in areas where new legislation needs to be developed, such as biodiversity, climate change, healthcare, and foods, he said.
