The President of the National Assembly Tsveta Karayancheva attended the official celebration of the 143rd anniversary since setting up the First City Council of Karlovo at the invitation of the Chairman of the Municipal Council Donyo Todorov. The solemn celebration was attended by the Chairman of the Defence Committee General Konstantin Popov, the Chairman of the Committee on Anti-Corruption, Conflict of Interests, and Parliamentary Ethics Boris Yachev and the MPs Krasimir Tsipov and Danka Lyurtova. The mayor of the town Dr. Emil Kabaivanov and citizens of Karlovo took part in the celebration.

Today we celebrate an important anniversary for the whole country — the anniversary of the establishment of the First City Council in Karlovo, said Tsveta Karayancheva at the solemn session of the Municipal Council. On this day 143 years ago, here, in one of the cradles of the Bulgarian Revival, the setting up of local self-government, the local authority, that has always been and will be closest to the aspirations and pains of the citizens, started, she said.

The President of the Parliament pointed out that as soon as its first steps the new council of Karlovo proved that it is guided by the ideas of the Revival and the national liberation movement. Measures are taken to restore the economic life, wheat vouchers are distributed to the poorest, public property is expanded and strengthened, measures are taken to maintain the cleanliness of the town, decisions are taken regarding a hospital to be opened and maintained, police to be organized, said Tsveta Karayancheva. In the very first days of freedom, the members of the council dedicated their energy to providing support to the widows and orphans who survived the slaughter in the summer of 1877 in Karlovo, she added. Being the successor of these bright names and Revival personalities is pride, but also a huge responsibility for the present rulers of Karlovo, said the President of the National Assembly.

Tsveta Karayancheva expressed hope that the successful cooperation between the 44th National Assembly and the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria (NAMRB) will continue in the next Parliament too. This is an important step towards guaranteeing the well-being and prosperity of the country, she pointed out and added that the signed Cooperation Agreement between the National Assembly and the NAMRB has helped the agenda of the municipalities to be more actively present in the legislative process.

The President of the Parliament said that for almost a year now, local authorities have faced the need to respond quickly and adequately to the pandemic. All solutions, restrictions and requirements that were introduced at the national level were practically implemented by the local authorities, she emphasized and added that this test has proved once again that the collaboration of the central, regional and local institutions is a condition without which the society cannot function normally.

Earlier the President of the National Assembly Tsveta Karayancheva attended the solemn water sanctification in front of the church “St. Nikolay”. She brought flowers to the monument of Vasil Levski and took part in the procession to the monument of the Chairman of the First City Council of Karlovo Vasil Karaivanov.
